Free flu shots for faculty and staff

Human Resources is sponsoring free shots for the seasonal — not H1N1 — flu for all benefits-eligible faculty, staff and retirees. Spouses, domestic partners and nonbenefits eligible faculty and staff may purchase the vaccine for $25 per shot, payable by cash, check or credit card. (more…)

Doc tells Rice community about Baylor’s part in fight against H1N1

The good news about the medical establishment’s fight against H1N1 is this: The system works.

That’s the word from Baylor College of Medicine’s Flor de Maria Muñoz, who spoke at Rice University’s McMurtry Auditorium Sept. 11 about progress in the development of a vaccine to stem the virus known originally as swine flu. (more…)

Dr. Flor de Maria Muñoz, who is part of the team conducting the H1N1 vaccine trials at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), will discuss the virus that has fast-forwarded flu season this year during a noon-hour lecture Friday, Sept. 11, in Duncan Hall’s McMurtry Auditorium. (more…)

Sept. 8 flu update

At the latest count, Student Health Services has seen 107 students with flu-like symptoms, and 47 of those cases have been confirmed as influenza.  Over the holiday weekend, a flu hotline set up for Rice students received eight calls seeking information; none of them were urgent. (more…)

What do I do if I get sick?

Students who have flu-like symptoms should call Student Health Services at 713-348-4966 before going to the clinic. The staff will determine if testing or treatment is necessary. To avoid spreading the illness to others, students who have the flu should go to their parents’ homes if they live in the Houston area; others should quarantine themselves in their rooms and arrange for a friend to bring meals and other necessities to them. Don’t return to class and social activities until at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever (without fever-reducing medications). (more…)
